Own It! The Ups and Downs of Homebuying for Women Who Go It Alone by Jennifer Musselman

Press Release

“This slender guide to home buying for single women offers a plethora of emotional support and anecdotal entertainment….Musselman (The Hip Girl’s Handbook for the Working World) extols the benefits of independently pursuing happiness and security and refusing to wait for or depend on a partner.”
~Publishers Weekly

With interest rates at an all-time record low, there has never been a better time for new buyers to break into the real estate market. This is good news for single women wanting to buy their own home. According to two studies from Harvard University, and the National Association of Realtors, single women compromise the fastest growing group of home buyers. In 2006, single women accounted for one-third of all condo sales and 22 percent of overall home sales. Even though the numbers speak for themselves, many women still put their homeownership dreams on hold out of fear, or in hopes Mr. Right will show up.

In Own It! The Ups and Downs of Homebuying for Women Who Go It Alone (Seal Press / June 2008 / $15.95), author Jennifer Musselman, homeowner and co-author of The Hip Girl’s Handbook for the Working World and The Hip Girl’s Handbook for Home, Car & Money Stuff, provides practical advice for women who are on the verge of getting into the market, but are held back by the belief that they can’t do it solo.

In eighteen chapters with titles like “The ‘Dirty Little Costs’ of Homebuying,” “Will Work for My Mortgage!,” “Finding ‘The One’,” and “Are Your Signs Compatible?,” Musselman covers all the seemingly murky aspects of real estate. Amid insightful and friendly discussion on down payments, property taxes, insurance, and escrow, Musselman weaves her personal anecdotes. She also highlights key definitions and relevant information to give “The 411.” A helpful resource section provides readers with additional tools that will bring them one step closer to owning their own home.
